Baypark to Bayfair Link (B2B), Tauranga

Permanent Design

The Baypark to Bayfair Link (B2B) is a Waka Kotahi project to provide improvements to SH2 in Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty.  PTSL is a sub-consultant to the principal designer, Jacobs, and has been responsible for designing the permanent traffic signals for the project including the grade separated interchange for SH2/SH29A and the signalised roundabout at SH2 / Matapihi Road / Girven Road.  PTSL utilised experience of designing signalised roundabouts gained in the UK in the development of the design.

PTSL has worked closely with the project sponsor Waka Kotahi and Tauranga City Council in the development of the traffic controls strategies and the design of the traffic signals.  The project is due for completion in late 2023.

Temporary Design

PTSL was contracted by the main B2B contractor, CPB Contractors, to undertake the design of temporary traffic signal arrangements required for traffic management at various stages of the project.  These temporary installations included:

  • At grade signalised pedestrian crossings across SH2 to allow for the pedestrians to be diverted so that an existing pedestrian underpass could be reconstructed and extended;
  • Conversion of an existing roundabout at SH2 / SH29A to an at grade signalised intersection (including incorporating the operation of an adjacent level crossing into the traffic signal control logic); and
  • Temporary arrangements for the layout and phasing of the SH2 / SH29A interchange to allow for the staged construction of the main SH2 carriageway.

In developing the temporary traffic signal layouts, PTSL prepared traffic modelling using SIDRA Intersection 9 to determine the effects on journey times through the road network to ensure measures met project contract journey time requirements.

PTSL assisted with the monitoring of the temporary arrangements.
