Felton Mathew Avenue / St Johns Road Intersection Upgrade
PTSL was appointed by Auckland Transport to investigate the operation of the priority-controlled Felton Mathew Avenue/ St Johns Road intersection which had safety and operational issues. Whilst primarily in a residential area, Felton Mathew Avenue provides access to an industrial area and therefore there are freight movements that use the intersection. The heavy vehicles using the intersection contributed to congestion on the side road as it was difficult for them to find appropriate gaps in the main road traffic flow.
PTSL studied the intersection to clearly identify the operational and safety issues at the intersection and developed the concept and scheme designs to signalise the intersection. The operation of the intersection was modelled using SIDRA Intersection. Additional changes to the operation of St Johns Road were recommended to improve the flow of traffic along this arterial road.
The recommended improvements to the intersection have been constructed and the intersection is now signalised.
